  • Open Registration begins October 26 and continues through December 18.

FAQ

Is Winter Session a stand-alone term or is it associated with either the fall or spring semesters?
Winter Session is not a stand-alone term. It is officially associated with the spring semester. Therefore, if an undergraduate student takes one three-hour course during Winter Session and nine (9) hours during the spring semester, the student's enrollment status will be full-time (12 hours). Note: If you are a veteran student using VA educational benefits, please speak with the as to how the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs calculates non-standard terms.

How often will classes meet?
The Winter Session is a three-week intensive session covering the same amount of content that would have been covered in a 16-week semester. Most of the in-person courses will meet four days a week (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) for several hours each day. Please review the Schedule of Classes for specific days and times that the course will meet. Regardless of the modality of the course (in-person, hybrid, online or remote), there will be significant time when the student will conduct coursework outside of any formal meeting days and times.

How many courses can I take during the Winter Session?
Students are permitted to take only one course during the Winter Session.

When will my final grade be available?
Your grade will be visible in NEIUport beginning January 22.

Will my academic standing be recalculated based on the grade that I receive in the Winter Session course?
No, your academic standing will not be recalculated after the Winter Session term. Academic standing is calculated only once per semester, so your academic standing will be determined at the end of the Spring semester.

Can I graduate at the end of the Winter Session?
No, students are not able to graduate at the end of the Winter Session. Clearance for graduation happens three times a year: at the end of the spring semester, at the end of the Summer Session, or at the end of the fall semester. Assuming that all other graduation requirements have been completed and you have applied for graduation, you would be considered for graduation at the end of the spring semester if you take your last course during the Winter Session (and the course is your final graduation requirement). In the situation described above, a bachelor's or master's degree candidate would be eligible for the May Commencement ceremony.

Can I use my U-Pass during Winter Session?
The U-Pass deactivates at the end of the fall semester until the beginning of the spring semester. In the interim, a student can use their U-Pass Card as an add-value Ventra card but would need to deposit funds themselves.

Will NEIU be open during the winter holidays?
NEIU will be closed for winter break from December 23 through January 2. Most University offices will reopen at 8:30 a.m. January 3.

I still have questions about Winter Session. Who should I contact?
You should contact your academic advisor for any questions that you might have. Additionally, you can contact the Registration Office at registration@neiu.edu.

University Core Curriculum

The University Core Curriculum, encompassing both the General Education-Distributive Learning program and Engaged Learning Experiences courses, develops and enhances students' intellectual and practical skills through immersion in disciplines and fields of study and by learning within the resources of community and diversity at Northeastern. Critical inquiry, learning how to recognize and respond to important questions, is the essence of the liberal arts and sciences.

Through public engagement, including research experiences, creative performance, and civic involvement, students can connect and adapt disciplinary practices and thinking beyond the classroom. Students completing the requirements of the University Core Curriculum will gain tools to become life-long learners, reflective individuals, ethical professionals, and active members of their communities. Through the University Core Curriculum, students will develop a broad foundation of knowledge and skills that will support advanced study and civic responsibility; and integrate and apply multiple intellectual perspectives of increasing complexity to new situations.

General Education-Distributive Learning For specific information on how to complete the General Education-Distributive Learning (DS) requirements, refer to the  webpage.   Engaged Learning Experiences For specific information on how to complete the Engaged Learning Experiences (ELE) requirements, refer to the  webpage.

FAQ

  • If you do not have a credit or debit card, you can purchase a prepaid card at many convenience or grocery stores. You also can pay with cash by coming in person to Enrollment Services in Room D 101 on the Main Campus.
  • All obligations that prevent the release of a transcript must be resolved before the request will be processed.
  • Transcript requests not made through NEIUport may require the student’s written signature (i.e. the signature page) before the request will be processed.
  • Any in-progress coursework for which you are registered will automatically be included on the transcript.
  • Northeastern only releases official transcripts. Current or former students whose access to NEIUport is active may view or print their own unofficial transcript.
  • Northeastern releases your entire academic transcript. Requests to only release one semester or, for example, only your undergraduate transcript cannot be honored.
  • Although requests to send a transcript showing semester grades can be submitted once the semester begins, grades will not be available until two days after the official end of the semester. Therefore, requests to “hold for the posting of grades” will not be processed until after the semester has ended.
  • Requests to “hold for the posting of degrees” will be processed approximately eight weeks after the official end of the semester.

Declaring a Major/Minor /academics/registrar-services/declaring-majorminor Declaring a Major/Minor Daniel Weber Wed, 06/13/2018 - 16:08

Declaring or Removing an Undergraduate Major, Pre-major or Minor

Northeastern requires all undergraduate students to declare a major by the time they have earned a total of 45 credit hours.

Students intending to major in business or graphic design can declare a “pre-major” until the program admission requirements to the College of Business and Technology or the Department of Graphic Design are met.

Declaring a Major, Pre-Major or minor

The Undergraduate Major Declaration form must be completed to declare a major or pre-major or concentration.
The Undergraduate Minor Declaration form must be completed to declare a minor.

These same forms must be used to make any changes to previously declared majors, pre-majors, minors or concentrations. The procedure is as follows:

  1. Obtain either the Undergraduate Major Declaration form or the Undergraduate Minor Declaration form (if declaring both a major and a minor, one of each form must be completed) online, from Enrollment Services (Room D 101), or your academic program.
  2. Obtain the necessary signatures and submit the form to Enrollment Services (Room D 101).

In most cases, students may follow this procedure at any time throughout the school year. Please check with the major department for specific deadlines.

Students who double major in both the Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies (BAIS) program and another major will have the BAIS program listed as their primary major, and this major will display on the student’s diploma. Both majors will appear on the student’s transcript.

Email declare@neiu.edu with any questions about the major/minor declaration process that we can answer for you.

Area of Study in Addition to the Major

Undergraduate students are not required to have a minor, with the following exceptions:

  • A student in the College of Arts and Sciences who majors in Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science or Physics must complete a required set of cognate courses in other sciences and mathematics.
  • A student in the College of Business and Technology must complete a required set of cognate courses in the Business and Technology core in addition to courses for the major.
  • Some majors in the Daniel L. Goodwin College of Education require a minor. Students should refer to the section of the Academic Catalog that details the requirements for each major to determine if a minor or a set of cognate courses is required.
