A new book

Associate Professors of Psychology Amanda Dykema-Engblade and Lisa Hollis-Sawyer have . 鈥淲omen and Positive Aging: An International Perspective,鈥 published March 15, surveys the latest international research in the fields of psychology, gerontology and gender studies related to the aging issues faced by women. The book contains an emphasis on the positive aging perspective in gerontology research.

 

Love connection

Nawaf Habib (M.S. 鈥11 Biology) and Tanya Gorgis (B.S. 鈥11 Biology) met at Northeastern, graduated from Northeastern and, earlier this month, got engaged at Northeastern. (For the record, Habib also is now a Biology instructor at Northeastern.) Check out the of the big moment鈥攃omplete with flash-mob dance team!

Advocates for funding

President Sharon Hahs, Executive Director of Government Relations Suleyma Perez and Presidential Fellow Qiumei (Jane) Xu participated at the 21st Annual National Capitol Forum on Hispanic Higher Education in Washington, D.C., on March 14-15. They visited with members of the congressional delegation to advocate for Title V funding and Higher Education Act Reauthorization language.

The Chicago Dance History Project has announced that Ensemble Espa帽ol founder Dame Libby Komaiko and Artistic Director Irma Su谩rez Ruiz will participate in a free discussion April 27 with Joel Hall of Joel Hall Dancers & Center and Hema Rajagopalan of Natya Dance Theatre.  will take place in from 6-7:30 p.m. in Ruggles Hall at Newberry Library. Komaiko and Su谩rez Ruiz also will participate in panel discussion on April 26.

  • Northeastern will be in Spring Recess from classes from March 21-27.
  • The city of Chicago has issued a Certificate of Recognition to Northeastern for its preventative work during a city-wide response to a meningococcal meningitis outbreak in 2015. In cooperation with Chicago鈥檚 Department of Public Health, Northeastern鈥檚 Office of Student Health and Counseling Services administered about 15 free preventative vaccinations to students and employees.
  • The Green Fee Committee will host the in Alumni Hall on March 31.

Two recent Social Work alumni have written stories for The New Social Worker online magazine as part of Social Work Month Project 2016. (B.A. 鈥15 Social Work) wrote about his inspiration and experience at Northeastern, and (B.A. 鈥15 Social Work) wrote about the life-changing experience that set her on her path.

Eddie Bocanegra (B.A. 鈥12 Social Work) continues to draw national attention for Urban Warriors, his project that pairs at-risk Chicago teens with combat veterans. Most recently, featured Urban Warriors, which also has participated in activities with Campus Recreation鈥檚 Outdoor Adventure Program.

Bridges to Employment

Northeastern will participate in a on March 30. Held at four locations across the state, the free Bridges to Employment events assemble executives and senior managers from the public and private sectors to engage with veterans in panel discussions that focus on the unique strengths that veterans can leverage to meet employers鈥 needs.
