Tree Campus USA
Northeastern has been honored with by the Arbor Day Foundation for its commitment to effective urban forest management. Tree Campus USA is a national program created in 2008 by the Arbor Day Foundation and to honor colleges and universities for effective campus forest management and for engaging staff and students in conservation goals.

Eleven members of the Northeastern community were honored during the on Feb. 19 at the Jacob H. Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies. Find out who!
Wins for The Independent
The Independent received four recent awards. The student newspaper placed sixth in Best in Show among all less-than-weekly newspapers at the in Los Angeles. At the convention in Chicago, Mary Kroeck won first place for a critical review (non-movie), Rut Ortiz placed second for a sports game story, and Brisa Becerril received an honorable mention recognition for front-page layout. The Independent competed against newspapers from Illinois colleges and universities with student enrollments greater than 4,000. Thirteen students from the Independent staff attended the two conventions.

Student-run radio station WZRD (88.3 FM) hosted a Feb. 25 with Karl Green (pictured above on the left), the original bassist and backing vocalist of the legendary 1960s rock band Herman's Hermits. During the interview, Green talked about performing on 鈥淭he Ed Sullivan Show鈥 and touring with The Who. Green performed eight songs live on WZRD and in front of an audience in the Student Lounge, including the mega-hits 鈥淚鈥檓 Into Something Good,鈥 鈥淢rs. Brown,鈥 and 鈥淚鈥檓 Henry VIII, I Am.鈥 The interview and performance were a special early version of WZRD's long-running performance show, Thursday Night Live.
Early voting locations
For the first time, El Centro will be a site for early voting before the 2016 Illinois Primary Election. Early voting at El Centro will begin Feb. 29 and continue through March 12 between 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The Main Campus also will host early voting from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. from March 9-11 in Student Union 003. at these locations is available only to those who are registered to vote in the city of Chicago. Voter registration will also be available.
A visit from the Illinois Secretary of Education
Illinois Secretary of Education Beth Purvis visited Northeastern on Feb. 26 to learn about the University and for the administration to share its concerns and challenges with the ongoing budget impasse. The meeting was attended by President Sharon Hahs, Provost Richard J. Helldobler, Vice President for Finance and Administration Michael Pierick, University Planning and Budget Council Chair Jon Hageman, Student Trustee Pedro Nungaray and Executive Director of Government Relations Suleyma Perez. - Northeastern finished in fourth place at the on Feb. 19-20 in Downers Grove, Ill. The team was made up of M.B.A. students Batnasan Garamjav, Mario Kochanski, Maria Lazanyi, Janusz Maka and Georgi Milushev.
- El Centro co-hosted a daylong conference with AT&T on Feb. 25 to expose 130 underserved Chicago Public Schools high school seniors to the STEM fields. This was the first time the event was not held at an AT&T facility.
- Northeastern will host a memorial for former English Professor Thomas Hoberg from 5-8 p.m. March 2 in Alumni Hall.

Iranian elections insight
Assistant Professor of History Mateo Farzaneh appeared on to talk about Iran鈥檚 Feb. 26 parliamentary elections. Speaking about the country鈥檚 recent nuclear deal, Farzaneh said, 鈥淲ith the sanctions being lifted and with the opening of the dialogue, with the shaking of hands of the secretaries and the foreign ministers, Iranians are very, very hopeful and they want to see to it that this will continue and be something greater than it is now.鈥

International Business Conference
The annual will focus on Europe and the European Union on March 7 and 8. Free and open to the public, the conference is organized and run by students from the College of Business and Management. Alumna and Global Chief Information Officer at Smithfield Foods Julia Anderson (B.S. Information Science) will present 鈥淩ecipe for Success鈥 on March 7. Pawel Pietrasienski, Minister Counselor in the Trade and Investment Section of the Polish Embassy in Washington, D.C., will deliver the keynote speech on March 8.
