Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. speaking from a lectern

Wednesday, January 27, 2016

Civil rights activist and President urged voter registration and participation鈥攑articularly among the student population鈥攄uring a Jan. 25 speech on 天天吃瓜鈥檚 Main Campus. Jackson鈥檚 speech came as the state鈥檚 public universities approach their eighth month without an appropriation.

鈥淭hose of you who are not registered to vote have nothing to say,鈥 Jackson said to the standing-room-only audience that filled Alumni Hall.

Jackson鈥檚 words echoed those of Northeastern , who in welcoming Jackson also challenged the crowd to start contacting their legislative representatives in Springfield about the importance of higher education.

鈥淚t is mission critical for us to make the state understand that it must provide an appropriation that funds a quality鈥攁nd an affordable鈥攑ublic higher education,鈥 he said. 鈥淲hen you finish talking to them, end every sentence with three of the most powerful words in America: 鈥楢nd I vote.鈥欌

After speaking, Jackson took questions and invited to the stage anyone who was an unregistered voter. About a dozen people accepted and were then led out to a table set up outside Alumni Hall.

鈥淚t鈥檚 time to rally,鈥 Jackson said. 鈥淭ime to register. And time to march.鈥
