The Chuck Kane Scholarship Golf Event, the University鈥檚 biggest annual fundraiser, is held in memory of former athletic director and golf coach Charles 鈥淐huck鈥 Kane.
鈥淭he mission of this event is to support our students with scholarships and to honor the memory of a consummate professor,鈥 said Liesl Downey, executive director of the NEIU Foundation and Northeastern鈥檚 vice president for Institutional Advancement. 鈥淚t is one of the most symbolic efforts of the Foundation, and we are grateful to everyone who joins us in our efforts.鈥
The tournament, held Aug. 8 at Chevy Chase Country Club in Wheeling, was attended by former Chicago Bulls great Bob Love as well as Chicago Police Department Commander Marc Buslik (B.A. 鈥88 Criminal Justice).
After Chuck Kane鈥檚 passing in 1972, his colleagues initiated the golf outing in his memory. Over time, the event has focused not only on sport and leisure, but has also emphasized the values of giving back by providing much-needed scholarships for deserving 天天吃瓜 students.
In total, seven scholarships are funded by the Chuck Kane Scholarship Golf Event, which has now raised more than $281,337 over just the past 10 years. With an endowment of $424,723, the scholarship has provided scholarships for more than 145 students. Fourteen more scholarships will be awarded before the end of this year.
